Pesticide application records in Washington

What WAC 16-228-1320 asks for on each structural pest control record, how long to keep it and what the customer must get, based on our reading of the rule. And how PestSheet covers it.

Not legal advice. This summarizes our research of the official rule, checked October 1, 2026. Rules change and may require more than what is listed here: confirm with the official text or with the agency (Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA)).

What the record must include

  • Full name and address of the customer
  • Address or exact location of the application
  • Year, month, day and start and stop time
  • Product name and EPA registration number
  • Wind direction, estimated speed (mph) and temperature (°F), except for baits in bait stations and applications within structures
  • Total amount applied (for pest control operators, to the nearest ounce of product or gallon of spray per site)
  • Amount applied per 1,000 sq ft or other measure
  • Concentration applied (for example percent product in the tank mix)
  • Pests to be controlled
  • Specific site treated
  • Apparatus license plate number
  • Licensed applicator's full name, license number, address and phone, plus full names of everyone who applied
  • Area or other measure treated
  • Full name and address of the commercial firm

How long to keep it

7 years. From the date of application. Records must be completed and available to the department the same day.

What the customer gets

  • On written request, the applicator must give the customer a record of each application on their property for the current season, with all the required record information.

Termites, fumigation and other cases

  • Landscape (lawn/ornamental) applications require a marker of at least 4 x 5 inches with fixed text ("THIS LANDSCAPE HAS BEEN TREATED BY" / "FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CALL").
  • At schools and day cares, the 48-hour notice and posting are the school's duty, not the applicator's.

Recent changes

Amended by WSR 25-22-065 (filed October 31, 2025), effective January 1, 2026.

How PestSheet covers it in Washington

Before you complete a visit for a client in Washington, PestSheet checks that these fields are filled in:

  • Applicator license or certification number
  • End time of the service
  • EPA registration number
  • Amount applied
  • Rate or dilution
  • Target pest
  • Areas or sites treated
  • Size of the area treated

For exterior applications, it also asks for:

  • Weather (wind, temperature)

Also:

  • Reminds you to keep records at least 7 years.
  • Export the records of any period as PDF or CSV for an inspection (Pro).

The client's name and address, the service date and start time, and the applicator's name are always recorded. The app uses the WAC 16-228-1320 template. It doesn't check items the app doesn't record (for example active ingredients or equipment); those remain your responsibility.
